The imperial austrian Habsburg family, which Sisi joined by her marriage with emperor Frans-Joseph, has always been a big family.

And because of the marriages the Habsburg and Wittelsbach families go back centuries and keeps them connected.

Sisi's mother Ludovika, daughter of the Bavarian Wittelsbach king Maximillian Josef, was the sister of Archduchess Sophie, who became a Habsburg family member by marriage with the Austrian archduke Franz Karl.

Another daughter of the bavarian king Maximiliaan Josef and half sister of Ludovika and Sophie, Karoline Auguste Charlotte, married the habsburg empreror Franz I of austria, father of Franz Karl, the husband of Sophie and grandfather of emperor Franz- Josef.

The daughter of Sisi, Archduchess Gisela, married the Wittelsbach prince Leopold. They had 4 children and 2 of them married a Habsburg Archduke.
